Our understanding of Worcestershire’s deep past comes from a number of local, regional and national research projects. Following on the from the 2003 Shotton project, which pulled together information about the Palaeolithic in the midlands, further research was undertaken in the county thanks to funding from Historic England (previously English Heritage) and the Heritage Lottery Fund. ‘Putting the Palaeolithic into Worcestershire’s HER’ project made discoveries and research publicly available, but was primarily academic in focus.
It was recognised that the stories uncovered through years of research had enormous public appeal, so in 2017 further funding was sought to share this research in the form of exhibitions, art installations, talks and written literature. It is intended that future research will build on previous projects and improve knowledge of our fascinating early prehistory.
